Thanks to the efforts of a Helena certified public accountant, the non-profit status of American Legion Post 41 has been restored.
John C. Edwards was named Post 41 commander in 2015.Soon after he discovered that the non-profit status of the local Legion post had been revoked in 2010 because some specific annual reports had not been filed. With the non-profit status not in force individuals were unable to make tax-deductible donations to Post 41 to help pay for much-needed repairs to its building located at 409 Porter St.
Edwards explained the plight of "The Hut", as it affectionately to locals, to Monica Bennett. In keeping with military tradition, Bennett presented Edwards with a list of tasks that needed to be accomplished in order for her to put together a proper application to the Internal Revenue Service to have the non-profit status restored.
"Monica really wanted to help the venerable veterans' organization," commented Edwards. "She was optimistic that everything would work out fine. She was right."
Edwards added,"It always helps to have a CPA on board when dealing with the IRS."
Last week, Post 41 received the official word that the non-profit status of Post 41 has been restored. The notification, said Edwards, came just in time for the Post to begin raising funds to celebrate the 100th anniversary of our country entering World War I.
Edwards reported the members of Post 41 will formally recognize Bennett for her work later this year.
"A lot of people talk about doing things for veterans' groups, but Monica Bennett stepped forward and really did," said Edwards.
Besides seeking donations to restore the building, Post 41 will soon start a membership drive to urge all eligible veterans to join.
Edwards noted that the roof, restrooms and kitchen are all in dire need of repair and updating.
"The building is still solid," Edwards observed. "However, the community has been using the structure since 1923 and it is time for some improvements."
